The many free and public programs of the Portland Center for Public Humanities are only made possible by individual gifts. With your support, we enhance our programs and ensure that our work fosters the vibrant intellectual and civil life of Portland.
We welcome your unrestricted gifts, as well as targeted support for the following two programs:
The Humanities Sustainability Research Project—This program, supported by the James F. and Marion L. Miller foundation, facilitiates public and campus-wide reflection on the conflicting notions of what sustainability means, how it attaches to our values, histories, and imagination, and how it signifies ethically, ideologically, and culturally.
For a city with as green a reputation as Portland, the Humanities Sustainability Research Project offers panel discussions, lectures, screenings, reading groups, and an annual national conference where we can deepen our cultural understanding and commitment to a sustainable future. Please click here for further information about this program.
The "Trajectories of Cosmopolitanism" Series—How and when do we form social relations, loyalties, and meanings that are global in scope? What is the relationship of these cosmopolitanisms to traditional borders of nation, race, or religion? What do they mean for international community? domestic politics, war, capitalism, or the mass media? This series brings some of the most prestigious scholars in the nation to Portland to speak about these issues between the springs of 2009 and 2010. All of these lectures are free and open to the public. The series simultaneously convenes a group of local scholars from seven campuses in Portland who will participate in workshops with the visiting scholars, and who will be charged with developing future programming on cosmopolitan issues and questions that face Portland, the United States, and the world.
